Financial Times Acquires London-Based Developer Of Its HTML5 Web App

The Financial Times has acquired London-based application development firm Assanka, which built a nifty HTML5 web app – and other applications – for the publisher.

FT staffers such as Katie Morley and Jonathan Wheatley started spreading the news on Twitter, garnering retweets from FT.com managing director Rob Grimshaw and PR rep Tom Glover, who confirmed the acquisition to me but declined to share more details.

The FT has good reasons for purchasing an application developer that focuses squarely on developing for the Web rather than building native mobile applications. As I wrote in a previous post, when the publisher’s HTML5 web app was unveiled:

“The Financial Times would rather not have Apple take a 30 percent cut of in-app subscriptions for its iOS publications, and has launched a HTML5 Web app that enables readers to access content across tablets and smartphones.”

Assanka has expressed its love for Web apps in the past:

“Assanka firmly believes that the craze for native apps is a short one and we are already seeing it on the wane. Native apps, which need to be distributed via a proprietary app store controlled by an operator or device manufacturer, also suffer from being restricted to the platform for which they are built, necessitating an almost complete rewrite for each different platform. Maintaining separate, functionally equivalent apps for Android, iOS, Blackberry OS6, Playbook, WebOS AND Windows Phone is an expensive and time consuming business, something that major publishers realise only too well.

Native apps have other limitations too. Web technology has matured over 15 years to provide a rich set of tools for making web applications that are open, accessible and linkable. The very ethos of web development is that it is fundamentally an open platform, inviting integration, connecting, linking and sharing of information. Native apps construct a silo around themselves and operate in their own artificially constructed world. Everything in that world may be beautiful and the user experience may be dazzling, but the value is locked into that container.

Native apps will always have a place on mobile devices, particularly for applications such as gaming where the performance demands are high and graphics requirements are intensive. Games often also take advantage of features such as accelerometers which are not (yet) available to access from web applications. For apps that need to take advantage of bleeding edge technology and offer exceptional performance, native code is still a good option. But for news and magazine publishers, the tide is turning.”

Phonedeck Turns Your Phone Into A Cloud App — 500 Pre-launch Invites

Phonedeck appeared last year at Le Web. At the time it seemed very much like a beta project to manage calls from a computer. But we’ve long had the position that real social graph is in your phone – the people you text and call – and Phonedeck has now come on leaps and bounds. Today it’s releasing 500 invites for TechCrunch readers (use the code “TechCrunch” on the site) and revealing more about its upcoming service.

This web/cloud platform lets you manage your mobile phone activity, including your contacts from your computer, sending and receiving SMS, initiating and answering calls. You don’t need to unlock your handset and you can even activate a chime sound when you lose the phone, say in the house. But most importantly you get a tonne of stats and data on the people you call, entire conversation histories and automatic updating of your contacts list via LinkedIn and/or Facebook, in a Plaxo-like fashion.

Although it launches next year you can try it out now. It’s only on Android right now but an HTML5 version will work and an iOS and Blackberry app is in the works.

After downloading the app, users’ phones are connected to the web platform via a cloud database from where calls and SMS texts can be made and received. It also displays incoming callers, showing their previous calls, SMS history, company and LinkedIn activity to complement their name and picture.

Think of it as Rapportive for your phone.

Forgot what you called that person about? Entire interaction histories by contact are logged so you can remind yourself.

Founder/CEO Dr. Frank Fitzek says Phonedeck makes use of the fact that we can do more with a call when it’s on a PC than on a mobile.

Security is built in – all connections made by the platform and associated apps make use of SSL encryption.

Personally I’ve often hoped that one day the phone will just be another cloud app and this is very close to the ideal.

Phonedeck is headquartered in Berlin, Germany, and was founded in 2010 by CEO Dr. Frank Fitzek, COO Gerrit Schulte, Head of Business Development Jens-Philipp Klein and the chairman Christophe Maire (recent winner of The Europas, who is also an investor in the company.

18% Of BlackBerry Subscribers Use OS 6, 50% Use OS 5

RIM has released some stats of their BlackBerry devices. While the world patiently waits for OS 7 to be released their BlackBerry 6 OS continues to increase, now making up 18% of in-market devices (up 8% in March). Still making up the lions share by 50% is OS 5, which is very telling. In addition, although there’s no recent stats of the number of apps the BlackBerry World has (last count was 20,000 apps and 3 million downloads per day), BlackBerry 6 makes up 31% of free app downloads and 54% of all paid app downloads. However, OS 5 is still incredibly popular with 40% of paid app downloads and a high 57% of all the free app downloads.
