NBA Jam Brings Comical Basketball Fun To iPhone

Let me preface this with a disclaimer: I've stayed away from every NBA Jam game on every platform.  Being a big fan of the NBA 2K series, the comical gameplay of the title just didn't appeal to me.  With a lack of decent basketball games on the iPhone, however, I thought I might as well give NBA Jam a shot.

Visually, the game look stunning on the small display.  With the characters sporting 3D polygonal bodies and high-res photographs for heads, the effect is equally creepy and hilarious -- just the very things the developers are likely aiming for.  The animation is fluid and actual game performance is predominantly smooth (with a few hiccups here and there).

The old NBA Jam gameplay is recreated in the iOS version.  That means, a relatively free-for-all game of 2-on-2.  All the crazy things you can do on console versions are faithfully remade, so it's a lot of fun if you're into the on-court mayhem that's been the title's trademark all these years.

Control system works very well.  You get a virtual stick, a turbo button and another pair of buttons that changes functions, depending on whether you're on defense or offense.  It's simple, but accurate.  There's a training camp mode where you can pick up more advanced controls, such as making use of the turbo to turn regular moves into something spectacular (and, often, implausible).

All 30 NBA teams are represented, with 3 to 5 current players for each team available for use.   Each team has unlockable players, too, which range from retired legends to team mascots.  And, yes, it's a boatload of fun.

If there's anything missing in NBA Jam for iPhone, it's multiplayer.  Arcade games, especially action-packed sports ones, are just bundles more fun when played against people you can insult throughout the game.  As it is, though, this is a very fun sports title well worth the $4.99 price.

Samsung Galaxy S II Packs Tegra 2, Well Some Do

The latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread touting smartphone out of the Samsung camp is the Samsung Galaxy S II, and previous reports have stated that the new Sammy handset would come packing Samsung’s own Exynos SoC, however apparently only some will sport that processor.

According to an article over on Slash Gear and by way of Android Community and Itporportal, NVIDIA has now confirmed that “some” Samsung Galaxy S II handset will sport the Tegra 2 System on Chip.

Apparently there’s no figures on just how many Samsung Galaxy S II units will have the Terga 2 SoC and there’s no way for the end user to know which chip the smartphone has on purchase.

The reason for the split between the two is apparently Samsung just can’t produce enough of their Exynos System on Chip to fill the demand for the Android device and thus contracted NVIDIA to deliver and unmentioned quantity of their Tegra 2 processor.

Now the big question with this is will the users actually notice the difference in performance between the two different processor smartphones, although apparently performance wise both handsets should be in line with each other.

MyVoucherCodes App Offers Discounts at Pizza Hut and BHS Restaurants

The MyVoucherCodes app recently became available for Android smartphone users and is a free mobile phone app, and now MyVoucherCodes has announced a partnership with Pizza Hut and BHS Restaurants to deliver discounts on takeaways and restaurants

The MyVoucherCodes app is also available for the iPhone from iTunes, and was the first moneysaving app of its kind to become available on the Android platform, and as of the 7th of March MyVoucherCodes offers 2-for-1 on main meals at Pizza Hut until April 30th.

Another deal the app offers is 30 percent off in-store at GAP via the MyVoucherCodes app up until the 13th of March. The MyVoucherCodes service uses GPS to deliver an overview of local retailers close to the user and what discounts those retailers are offering.

The Chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, Mark Pearson says, “The partnership team worked hard to build relationships with Pizza Hut and subsequently a great deal is now available to all those who have the MyVoucherCodes App on their smartphone. The success of the app is continually growing and with this comes more and more partnerships. We currently have many great partnerships in the pipeline, which I believe will be greatly received by the app users.”

The MyVoucherCodes app can be downloaded to an iOS device for free from iTunes and also to Android devices for free from the Android Market.

HTC Thunderbolt Get Hold of Greenlight, Geared Up to Ship

As we all are familiar with the fact that there are continuous rumours related to the release of the HTC ThunderBolt every single day. However if these pieces of astuteness are trustworthy, in that case that infuriation may soon be over.

Two different sources, one a public tweet and another a private tip, both confirmed that Verizon Wireless has finally given its blessing to the HTC ThunderBolt and it is now ready to ship to stores. If this is true, this means we should likely see the ThunderBolt get released in a matter of days.

And after all the delays, we won’t be surprised if there aren’t too many of you left hanging around and waiting for it to show up. But this revamped Desire HD with its 4.3 screen and true Verizon LTE installed running at 5-12 Mbps normally will be a hot item and rather lust worthy.

However the release date of the ThunderBolt could easily be the rumoured March 4 date that’s been talked about for quite some time now, though March 10 is rather realistic as well. What’s been the holdup? Nobody knows for sure, but supposedly there have been several reasons leading to the delays, such as firmware problems that show off abnormally short battery life.

Microsoft resumes WP7 update for 'bricked' Samsung handsets

After much brouhaha and rigmarole, Microsoft appears to be back on track with its inaugural Windows Phone 7 software update. An update that wasn't actually supposed to do anything but prepare that first wave of WP7 devices for their first real update but, ironically, left about 10 percent of WP7 owners with issues including some precision-built Samsung paperweights. Last night Microsoft issued an update on the matter saying that the February update for Samsung handsets has been fixed, resuming its rolling release schedule. Great, with this hopefully behind us, maybe we can now focus on the first real update scheduled for "early March" that will finally check off the platform's infamous lack of copy 'n paste on the road to multitasking, Twitter integration, and a vastly improved IE9 browser later in the year.

Apple iPad 3 More Exciting Than iPad 2 Claims Staffer

No doubt there is the usual excitement that comes with any Apple event, but apparently today’s Apple iPad 2 event may not hold that much excitement for Apple iPad 2 hopefuls as apparently the next generation iOS tablet isn’t up to all the hype it’s been given.

According to an article over on the Boy Genius Report, the guys over at Cult of Mac have received word from someone who is claiming to be an Apple staffer, although anonymous, that apparently said…

“For the iPad 2 don’t get your hopes up too high. That’s all I’m going to say. They’ve had a number of problems along the way, and the third-generation iPad is the one to make a song and a dance about.”

Of course this is just one supposed Apple employee’s opinion on the Apple iPad 2, and thus should be treated as such, but perhaps the iOS faithful that are expecting an all singing, all dancing tablet in the iPad 2 may find themselves a tad disappointed.

Whatever the case, no doubt the Apple iPad 2 will be successful as all of Apple’s gear usually is, but perhaps maybe waiting to throw your money at the Apple iPad 3 would be the more prudent option, although there’s no concrete word on just when we will see the Apple iPad 3 appear.

Do you think the Apple iPad 2 will live up to customer expectations?
