Today’s Mobile News in Brief (April 18, 2011)

As reported here on Cell Phones Etc. and across the Web, here’s your daily brief on what happened in the world of mobile phones this Monday, April 18th, 2011.

iOS and Android continue chipping away at mobile gaming market, consoles remain strong
It’ll probably take a few more years before iOS and Android apps overtake console games, but they are making some headway especially in the portable game software scene. Thanks to the impressive sales of Android devices, combined iOS and Android game share (by revenue) is now 34% compared to 19% accounted for by iOS back in 2009. As a result, console (DS and PSP) game revenue share shrunk from a high of 81% in 2009 to just 66% in 2010. With WP7 expected to create more of an impact this year, there’s no doubt these figure will further decrease with iOS and Android getting a new ally in the mobile gaming wars.

A high-ranking Samsung official revealed this bit of news, and divulged that they’re also considering offering this new dual-core processor to other phone makers. A 2GHz dual-core smartphone is definitely something worth watching out for, but come on, it’s still a long ways to go before 2012. We’re in for more product launches as we head to the half-way point of 2011, and who knows, one of those devices might even beat Samsung to the punch.

TD Bank iPhone app

TD Bank iPhone app gets updated to version 2.1
The TD Bank iPhone app is now at version 2.1. Apart from the usual bug fixes, this latest version now supports viewing and canceling of pending bill payments, getting of TD Warehous stock quotes, and sending/receiving of Interac email money transfers. You can now likewise log into your WebBroker Connect ID through the app. Needless to say, mobile banking just got a lot easier. Well, not exactly for everyone, but as far as iPhone-using TD Bank clients are concerned.

HTC working on 16-megapixel shooter for Windows Phone device [video]
HTC isn’t exactly known for their high-megapixel camera phones, but based on this new tidbit, they’re about to change all that with their next Windows Phone 7 device. There’s still a lot we don’t know about it, but it does have a teaser vid already, and according to the little info that was revealed in the short video, it will pack a 16-megapixel camera complete with dual-LED flash. The device itself looks a lot like the Desire S with modified buttons for the WP7 platform. However, it’s still not certain if that’s actually it or just a placeholder for the upcoming handset. One thing’s for sure though, if it’s real and gets announced, we’ll be here to give you the juicy details about HTC’s new monster phone.

iPhone 5 to have 8 megapixel camera and improved antenna, same old design?
According to Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 5 will begin production in September. We’e already heard that before. But he does go on to say that the iPhone 5 will come with an 8-megapixel camera and run on the same A5 processor used on the iPad 2. That we haven’t heard before. The new iPhone will also reportedly comes with a redesigned antenna, but will still look a lot like the iPhone 4 with slight modifications. Sounds definitely plausible, but I guess only time will tell.
