PhoneNews.com today has decided to cease running advertisements provided by Google. We of course do not take this decision lightly, as Google is one of the largest advertising companies in the world.
Google has decided to begin ranking their search results in part to favor the largest sites on the Internet, which happen to be their largest advertising partners. Their focus on quality content has now taken a backseat to the quality of their partnerships. It’s a game we chose to not be a part of.
While Google refuses to disclose their search algorithms, this is part and parcel of the discourse you may have seen today throughout the tech and search communities. And, we are making this decision to help further convey to Google the Internet community’s discontent.
This is not a lifetime ban of all-things-Google. It is simply our way of voting with our wallets, and hoping that Google returns to an agnostic stance, and comes up with better ways to combat spam. Our search results have been impacted by this move negatively, as Google is now favoring our competitors because of their size, not because of the quality of their content.
This change will be phased in over the next 30 days, and we will instead focus more on direct advertising sales.
Help improve Google (and PhoneNews.com) by sounding off. Comments, tweets, and diggs are all welcomed, and very much appreciated…
