Nokia E6, Nokia X7
Nokia today announced the Nokia E6 and the Nokia X7, two new smartphones aimed at business people and entertainment enthusiasts respectively. The two devices are the first Nokia smartphones to contain the updated Symbian software, with new icons and usability enhancements such as improved text input, a faster browser and refreshed Ovi Maps.
“We are further strengthening Nokia’s smartphone portfolio with these two new devices, both of which offer a more beautiful and intuitive user experience that will soon also be available for the Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-01,” said Jo Harlow, head of Nokia’s Smart Devices business. “With these new products and more Symbian devices and user enhancements coming in the near future, we are confident we can keep existing Nokia smartphone customers engaged, as well as attract new first-time and competitor smartphone users.”
Following on from Nokia’s highly successful Nokia E71 and Nokia E72 devices, the Nokia E6 is a sleek business smartphone with a full QWERTY keypad and a high resolution touch display. Designed using premium materials such as glass and stainless steel, the device comes in a compact size that makes it easy to use with either one hand or two. The Nokia E6 offers exceptional battery life and the best out-of-the-box Microsoft messaging experience on a business smartphone, including access to Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Communicator Mobile and Microsoft SharePoint.
The Nokia X7 is an entertainment-focused smartphone with a large 4″ display ideal for gaming, and an 8 Megapixel camera for capturing pictures and HD-quality video. A distinctively designed device, the Nokia X7 is made from a combination of seamless stainless steel and glass – delivering a solid and durable feel in the hand. The Nokia X7 comes preloaded with the popular Galaxy on Fire HD and Asphalt 5 HD games.
The Nokia E6 and Nokia X7 are also the first smartphones to contain the complete update of the Symbian software user experience. This update offers a host of usability enhancements, including fresh, new icons, improved text input, a faster internet browsing experience and a refreshed Ovi Maps application with improved search and new public transport routes. The renewed software also offers a strong set of new features aimed at business users in particular, including true enterprise grade security with hardware accelerated encryption, and new e-mail features such as full meeting request support.
In coming months the software update, which is nick-named Symbian Anna, will also be available as standard on newly shipping Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-01 devices, as well as available to download on previously purchased models of those same smartphones.
Nokia E6 – business is in hand
Nokia E6, a compact QWERTY and touch device aimed at business and general users who need to get things done while they’re on the move. Busy emailers rejoice – there’s now a new Symbian business device that you can operate single-handed.
The QWERTY and touch experience on the Nokia E6 offers faster navigation and operation than either a pure touch or keyboard-only system. While experienced users can get much faster text-entry from a QWERTY keyboard than they ever will from a touch display, being able to launch apps and choose options through the touch screen is often quicker than navigating through options with the thumbpad. It’s the best of both worlds for busy emailers and status-updaters.
The screen is a bright 2.46-inch LCD capacitive touch display offering 16mn colours and a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels. It’s made of tough glass for great durability.
The device comes with 8GB of internal memory and support for MicroSD cards up to 32GB. The battery is a removable Nokia BP-4L 1500mAH – rated for up to a month on standby and 7h30m talk-time over 3G – longer over GSM connections. As you would expect, it offers Pentaband 2G/3G network support for world travellers and WiFi connectivity through 802.11 b/g/n. There’s also Bluetooth 3.0 with support for stereo headphones.
The device measures 115.5 x 59 x 10.5mm and weighs 133g. The 8-megapixel full focus (EDOF) camera has a dual-LED flash, 2X digital zoom (3X in video mode) and offers HD 720p video recording at 25fps.
Like other Symbian phones, the Nokia E6 comes with free global walk and drive navigation through the latest Ovi Maps. It also comes with free push email and IM, providing you have a data plan. The latest Symbian operating system now comes with five home screens, an improved browser and redesigned interface (there’s more info on Symbian Anna here). Bundled software includes QuickOffice, World Traveler, JoikuSpot Premium and F-Secure Mobile Security. More apps can be downloaded and installed through Ovi Store.
For the many existing Nokia E71 and E72 users, the Nokia E6 is the upgrade they’ve been waiting for. They now get a much higher resolution screen (four times the pixels), the latest Symbian operating system, Symbian Anna, improved support for Mail for Exchange, Microsoft Communicator Mobile, SharePoint and Office documents. There’s much more memory, much better connectivity and an 8-megapixel camera. There’s also support for USB On-The-Go and AV-out for connecting to a television or headphones.
The Nokia E6 is expected to ship in Q2 2011 – before taxes and subsidies it will cost €340. North American availability is expected in Q3.
Nokia X7 – extreme entertainment
Nokia X7, first 4-inch entertainment smartphone, made from toughened glass and seamless stainless steel, it offers a unique and durable design that will stand out from the crowd. The 4-inch, capacitive AMOLED display offers 16 million colours and a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels. And it’s made of tough glass, so it won’t shatter if you lose control during a drive around Asphalt 5 HD.
This device is purpose-built for entertainment and that includes the media you create yourself. The 8-megapixel full focus camera also offers 720p video recording and comes with a dual LED flash. The Nokia X7 comes with 8GB memory card pre-installed, with up to 350MB built-in operating memory. It can support MicroSD cards up to 32GB.
The device measures 119.7 x 62.8 x 11.9mm (thinner at the edges) and weighs 146g. It offers Pentaband 2G/3G network connectivity and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi support. It offers a 3.5mm audio connector for headphones.
The 1200mAH battery is rated for up to 450 hours standby and 4.5 hours talktime on a 3G network – longer over GSM.
As you would expect, the Nokia X7 comes with free walk-and-drive navigation through the latest Ovi Maps. There’s messaging through Nokia Email and you can connect to Facebook, Twitter and RenRen (in China) using Nokia Social. It comes with Galaxy on Fire HD and Asphalt 5 HD preinstalled. The Nokia X7 will be available in Q2 2011 and, before taxes and operator subsidies, it will cost €380.
