Korean manufacturer Samsung rounds on Apple with release of new Android-based music player
Samsung has launched a new MP3 device, the Samsung Galaxy Player 50, the first such device to be powered by Google’s Android platform.
Featuring a 3.2 inch touch screen, two megapixel camera, WI-FI and GPS, the Galaxy Player is available with either 8GB or 16GB of memory with the option to upgrade to 32GB with the addition of a micro-SD card.
Unlike its direct rival the Apple iPod, the Samsung device is compatible with Flash. The 8GB MP3 player will retail for 149 while the 16GB model has no recommended price but is available from retailers, including Amazon for 179.99, from Friday.
The release of this latest device follows the release of two smaller music players by the electronics manufacturer in early December – the U6 and Q3 devices – available in 2GB and 4GB and 4GB and 8GB respectively.
It is unknown whether these previously released gadgets have been popular after a Samsung spokesperson refused to comment on sales figures when pressed by Mobile News.
Samsung UK and Ireland managing director Simon Stanford said: “Samsung is excited to be announcing the launch of the Galaxy Player 50, a new addition to our MP3 portfolio, and an extension to the popular Galaxy family.
“That, combined with the recently launched U6 and Q3 means that whether it’s music, games or videos people are into, there really is something for everyone from our range of products.”
